Air Tricker concept model

On the Tokyo Motorshow of 2001 Yamaha introduced the Tricker concept model, which shortly after went into production and was introduced into the Japanese market.

Takeshi Higuchi’s brainchild is a cross breed between a mountain bike and a motorcycle: "Our main target was, to create a bike that was not difficult to ride and with only a bit of experience one should be able to perform standing, little jumping or controllable wheelies. All these tricks should be carried out safely and at low speed, so they are easy to control. And on top of that, the bike was supposed to still be used as a means of transport in particular in urban environment."

Yamaha Motor Europe Product Planning had followed the development of the Tricker trend in Japan with great interest and decided to investigate and further develop the Tricker concept for the European market. And after indepth studies tipped off with inspirations from Freestyle Motorcross our Product Planners are now ready to present to the friends of the Yamaha Design Café and live on the Intermot 2004 in Munich: the Air Tricker concept model.

The target of the European Tricker concept is to reach active sport enthusiast teens & twens and get them interested in motorcycling by offering a bike with the image of a gliding sports tool. This association with "air", directly led to the model name.

The Air Tricker has many parallels with the original Tricker: it is light, agile, easy to ride and it allows the reasonably experienced rider to perform controlled tricks.

That is the reason why Air Tricker is equipped with the light and powerful engine of the YZ250F motocrosser as well as an ultra light carbon frame. This results in a total weight of 88kg, which is lighter than the YZ250F!

Inspired by existing BMX-technology, Tommy Masumoto from “MAS Engineering” developed a system for a double rotator allowing 360º headstock turns! You might imagine that this special feature allows for some very unique tricks on the Air Tricker...

And there are more specialties: the Yamaha Motor Europe Product Planning Team got together with Öhlins for the developement of a BMX–style front fork (diameter 66mm) and a semi - side link rear suspension. This should sustain even more extreme usage from jumping to climbing at all speed.

To top off its playfull character, the Air Tricker gets an acrylic bottom plate, which makes sliding and overcoming of obstacles possible.
